Subject: Congratulations to UPDF

Comrades,

The UPDF must be congratulated on this great achievement. It is indeed a great achievement to capture Otti's walking stick. Wow!!!!

Army seizes Otti's cap, walking stick

KAMPALA - Top rebel commander Vincent Otti lost a cap and a walking stick to the UPDF on Saturday, a military spokesman has said.

The 4 Division spokesman, Lt. Frank Baraza, said yesterday that Otti narrowly survived being captured by the UPDF in Gulu. At least seven of his men were killed in separate battles, he said.

Baraza said "[Otti] survived narrowly; he dropped his walking stick and a cap. Our forces are still hunting him and we are sure we will get him."

Baraza told The Monitor by telephone yesterday that the UPDF engaged the Lord's Resistance Army fighters in several battles and rescued at least 22 former abductees.

Nine were rescued in Palabong and Awer in Kilak sub-county on Saturday and 13 were rescued on Sunday at Icwero in Paicho sub-county.

The army also recovered five sub-machine guns. On Saturday alone one PK gun, 14 empty magazines, two 82mm recoilless gun bombs and 440 rounds of ammunitions were recovered.

On Easter Sunday, the army battled a small group of rebels and recovered 352 rounds of ammunitions and a solar panel. A rebel was killed at Bungatira and two others forced to surrender.

Those who surrendered are Mr Francis Lapeja and Mr Gilbert Obote. "They were trying to sneak into a village and loot but our forces intercepted them and managed to kill one," Baraza said.

Meanwhile, the MP for Erute North, Mr Charles Gutumoi, said suspected LRA rebels on Sunday attacked Palela-Ejie village in Ogur sub-county in Lira and killed two people and abducted several others.

"Easter was not well at all," he said, "these people had gone to look for food when they met the rebels. This place is only 9km from Lira town." The MP identified the dead as Omar Ogwal and Odong Ogwal.
