Ylva,
As you discovered, Dr. John Wiseman has been my
supervisor for the past 4 years. He died of cancer
related causes on Sunday. Please could you post the
following brief notice on the g-list if one hasn't
already been posted.
Thanks
lianne.

Dear Gambia List community,
I regret to inform you all of the death of Dr. John
Wiseman of The University of Newcastle, England. As
some of you may already know, John was diagnosed with
throat cancer in January and was set to begin
radiation therapy this week. His sudden death comes as
a great shock to everybody who knew him and we are
still trying to come to terms with his loss. John was
highly devoted to the study of Gambian politics and
society and his love of The Gambia was reflected in
his writings.
As a friend, colleague and fellow Gambianist, I shall
dearly miss his guidance and companionship.
For those of you in England, a funeral service will be
held at 2:15pm on Friday, March 10 at St. Thomas's
Church, St. Mary's Place, Newcastle upon Tyne with a
reception to follow at the Department of Politics at
Newcastle University. At the request of Jill Wiseman,
donations in memory of John will be given to an
African charity to be determined. Donations should be
made payable to Newcastle University and sent to Joan
Davison c/o The Department of Politics, University of
Newcastle, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE1 7RU, England.

Sincerely,

Lianne Parrett
PhD Candidate
Department of Politics
Newcastle University
