AFRICA INSTITUTE FOR AGRARIAN STUDIES (AIAS)

Invitation to network on common themes

The African Institute for Agrarian Studies (AIAS), a newly formed
research and advocacy organization is establishing a data base of
African experts and organizations in the following areas:

· Land Reform: land redistribution, tenure, land legislation, land
administration, popular struggles, social movements;
· Agrarian change: productivity, land use efficiency, food
security, livelihoods and rural institutional change;
· Natural resources and access: land, water, forestry,
biodiversity, wildlife and tourism and environmental sustainability.

AIAS  programmes aims to support existing and new institutional
research capacities through the facilitation of network of scholars,
at continental and international levels and to share research
findings, publication and policy engagement experiences on long-
term policy analysis and advocacy agenda on land and agrarian
reform.  The research program will support networks in developing
an in-depth knowledge base, focused expertise, policy research
and analysis, cooperation and networks and effective links to the
policy process.  The programme would engage African scholars in
evolving a research programme agenda on agrarian issues, land
tenure reforms, land reform implementation, land use issues and
rural democracy and justice.  The goal is to:

· Broaden and deepen intellectual and policy analysis skills and
work on agrarian issues at the African and global levels;
· Mobilise resources towards facilitating strategic civil society
actions to influence land policies towards redistribution in a
constructive, peaceful and sustainable manner, and
· Enable governments and political agents to absorb structured
advice and research findings.

African experts and organizations in the areas listed above and the
following areas listed below are encouraged to send the relevant
information (name of individual or organization, areas of expertise,
full address - including telephone, fax email, postal and/or physical
address.)  Individuals should send their resumes and organizations,
their mission statement/brochure (electronically if possible) but
hard copy is acceptable.

Areas of interest include: agronomists, agricultural trade,
agricultural economists, political economists.  Organizations
working on issues of food security, environment, rural development,
agricultural aspects of international trade agreements are
encouraged to send in the relevant information as well.

Aside from the database, AIAS will also establish an electronic
discussion group and a listserv.  If you are interested in
participating in these, please feel free to send your contact
information as well.  The e-discussion group will include scholars,
policy makers and activists.  Those on the listserv will receive
regular communications from AIAS related to its activities, events,
publication, seminars, and workshops.  AIAS will publish a
calendar of events related to agriculture trade issues and you are
encouraged to send in the relevant data for inclusion.
