GPDP leader lauds IEC Written by Lamin M. Dibba Wednesday, 05 October 2005 Hendry Gomez, the secretary-general and leader of the Gambia Party for Democracy and Progress (GPDP), has patted the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on the back for its free and fair conduct of the recent by-elections.
Speaking to the Daily Observer from his base in Hamburg, Germany, Mr Gomez said the IEC showed uncommon neutrality in the conduct of the by-elections. “I must say that the spirit is a good omen for the forthcoming presidential election. This performance of the IEC is historic on the African continent and I am sure countries in Africa and the world at large will learn from the political maturity of Gambians. This has proven to sceptics that the IEC has measured up to expectations. Every Gambian is duty-bound to help in whatever way to maintain peace and desist from political violence in our beloved country,’’ Gomez said.

On the performance of the U-17 in the just-concluded Fifa world championship in Peru, Mr Gomez said the Baby Scorpions “did not lose”. “They have made their mark on world football by beating Brazil the world champions in football,” he said.

According to him, it is now up to every Gambian to drum up support for the boys in their future football campaigns, as football can heighten a country’s prestige and image. “Our boys deserve every support to prepare them for more international competitions,’’ he said.

It is for this reason, he said, he is very keen to see the boys progress to bigger competitions with the resultant glory reflecting on all Gambians.

Therefore, in line with the plan to make the U-17 the nucleus of the senior national team, Mr Gomez urged all Muslims to seize the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan to pray for the realisation of the plan.
