From a friend from Kiang, really despondent about the election results, and
our country's state of affairs...

>Saul,
>
>I cannot really understand what the hell happened to those idiots in Kiang
>East. Saul, I have been made sick by the results of this by-elections. It
>shows the level of political consciousness in this country and the
>political
>naivete of our people in Kiang and probably everywhere else in the
>provinces.
>
>Saul, I cannot believe the results myself. I found it really difficult to
>believe that after all the havoc this regime has wrecked on this nation,
>there will still be people who will cast thier votes for them.
>
>For Kiang, it was really money that changed people's mind. Could you
>believe that the ruling APRC used over D2 million just to capture that
>seat. They
>were giving some compound heads huge sums of D5,000 and D10,000 depending
>on
>the number of votes in a compound. They were buying cheap things like
>bicycles, radios, tape recorders, etc for our illiterate mothers, brothers,
>sisters just to get their votes. Saul, what happened in Kaing is
>incredible.
>I cannot really explain all the dirty tactics the ruling party employed
>just to get the Kiang seat.
>
>Saul , you know how poor people are in the provinces and their poverty
>has been aggravated by the inability of this regime to even purchase their
>nuts. Believe it or not, up to this very moment, some farmers are still not
>paid
>for their nuts. If somebody, who is waiting to be paid for his nuts and is
>not even sure of getting his money in the next 4 to 5 months, is given
>something
>like D2,000, he/she will certainly sell his/her votes. Some women were
>heard
>saying in various parts of Kiang that "no matter which of the two
>candidates get elected, I
>will never get such a huge sum of money from him. So why should I not take
>it?" Saul it is really a pity,
>isn't it?
>
>Saul, you see our people in the provinces and even those in our so-called
>urban areas cannot actually analyse political situations and forgo
>immediate benefit for the future one. They value the few thousand Dalasis
>these
>idiots give them more than anything else. It is really a pity. If not
>because of our people's lack of capacity to analyse and know what will
>benefit them in future, they will certainly not vote for these idiots and
>ignorant fools. Somebody who has failed to purchase your nuts for years,
>now coming with money to purchase your votes. Any reasonable human being
>should really see the ill-intention of such a person. But Saul, our people
>are not reasonable people. That is the bottom line.
>
>Saul , really we are doomed, because our people who constitute the
>majority of our populace are not really politically conscious.
>
>Saul, as for me I am really pissed off with everything in this bloody
>country called The Gambia. From now on, I will fight very hard to get out
>of
>this mess, if not I will die very quickly of anger and frustration. I am no
>longer interested in my job. I go to work any time I like. If I am not
>married , i will leave this bloody government job and try to get out of
>this
>place.
>
>Saul , my fear is that the other Kiang seat(Kiang West) may also go to
>these
>idiots in the forthcoming general elections if care is not taken. A lot of
>people are switching political loyalty these days in Kiang West for one
>reason or another. With this defeat in Kiang East, a lot more may also
>changed to the bloody ruling APRC...
