AMJ Mourns Passing of Prof. Edward Said

(Washington, DC, 9/25/03) American Muslims for Jerusalem today expressed its
profound sadness at the death of Edward Said, one of the best known
Palestinian intellectuals in the United States. "Edward Said's loss will be felt by
millions of people throughout the world. And for Palestinians, whose tragedy
and whose stories he so eloquently helped explain to the public, a tree has
fallen. The magnitude of this loss is profound. But Edward Said's extensive
writings and passionate spirit will live on as a powerful legacy and
call to action for generations to come," said AMJ Executive Director
Khalid Turaani.

Said was professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia
University. An internationally renowned writer and scholar and one of the leading
intellectual figures of this era, his book "Orientalism" was widely credited with
inventing the field of post-colonial studies in the humanities.

Among his many other books, many of which have been translated into a number
of languages, are Orientalism, Culture and Imperialism, The Politics of
Dispossession, Covering Islam, After the Last Sky, The Question of Palestine, The
End of the Peace Process and Reflections on Exile. His memoir, Out of Place, won
the New Yorker Book of the Year Award. The New York Times has called him "one
of the most influential literary and cultural critics in the world."

Said's writings about the Middle East and its relationship with the West have
gone far to open new roads in academia and to influence public opinion.

"Prof. Said's acute intelligence and passionate commitment to freedom and
justice will be sorely missed. AMJ extends its deepest sympathies and
condolences to Edward Said's family, friends, and to the millions of people around the
world whom Said has so profoundly touched with his writings and courage,"
concluded Turaani.
