IT WAS NOT THE LIFE IMAGE OF BAI NYASS THAT WAS DISCOVERED IN BANJUL -IMAM
FAYE CLARIFIES -CAUTIONS MUSLIMS TO AVOID IDOL WORSHIPING
BY PA NDERRY M'BAI

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

September 15, 2005
The Deputy Imam of Banjul Muntakha Faye, has said that it was not the life
image of Bai Nayass that was discovered at his home in Banjul, but was quick
to add "it was his real image that appeared on our wall".

He was responding to a question fired by this reporter, as to whether the
much talked about Bai Nyass's image discovered in The Gambia was indeed life
or a mere image.

The Imam indicated that he received phone calls from reliable sources in
Banjul, who confirmed to him that they indeed saw Bai Nyass's image on his
wall. He added that he had no cause to doubt these sources, whom he
described as very credible and people of integrity.

Speaking to The ALLGAMBIAN online newspaper in an exclusive interview
recently, the Imam who is on a visit here in the United States warned
Muslims not to use the Bai Nyass image discovery in Banjul as idol or
worshipping centre. The Imam in a frank and candid statement says people
should not visit the site to seek prayers or touch the image. "it has
nothing to do with idol. If people want to seek prayers, they should get
into the compound and pray. There is a mosque in the compound." said the
Banjul Imam.

When asked to react to claims that the "Bai Nyass image discovery" in Banjul
was a religious propaganda Imam Faye dismissed such claims, describing them
as totally misplaced. "We are not propagating in anything. We are seeing Bai
Nyass every day. I myself, I'm seeing Bai Nyass every blessed day. I'm not
waiting for him to appear in any wall." Imam Faye told The ALLGAMBIAN.

While confirming that pictures of Bai Nyass's image were taken in Banjul,
shortly after his discovery, the Imam said the image discovery is a good
news for The Gambia and her people. "It means progress for the Nation. It is
also a message that people should return themselves to Allah and worship
him." He explained.

The Imam who had series of Islamic conferences here in the US, added that
Gambians should love and help each other during this period of our Nation.
The Imam who said he is not a politician and would not comment on our
country's fragile political situation warned against Gambians harming each
other. He maintains that Gambians should nurture our cherished peace and
continue to treat each other with respect and dignity.

When asked whether the late Bai Nyass knew him at the time, Imam Faye who is
the founding proprietor of the Banjul based Islamic NGO called the Rawdul
Koran Islamic Charitable Organisation said Bai Nyass "was my religious and
spiritual teacher at Medina his home town. I stayed at his home in Medina
while learning the Koran. I was there until he passed away"

Further quizzed as to what type of person Bai Nyass was Imam Faye said the
late renowned religious leader was a knowledgeable person with high morals.
He went as far as describing Bai Nyass, "as a man of peace, who believes in
the ideals of helping and sharing."
