Hamat Bah’s claim that some 2500 voters have been transferred to Upper Saloum in the run-up to the September 29 by-election is unfounded, Alhajie Mustapha Carayol, the vice chairman and returning officer for the Independent Electoral Commission(IEC) in Janjanbureh, has declared.
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Observer in his office in Janjangbureh shortly after the nomination of NADD’s Hamat Bah and APRC’s Sainey Mbye, the IEC vice chairman insisted that only 129 voters were transferred to Upper Saloum, contrary to the 2500 voters alleged by Hamat Bah. “That is false. He is misleading the public,’’ he said.

Mr Carayol further denied claims that one of the IEC staff Abdoulie Jeng did the transfers. “This is not true and the register we are going to use for the elections is not here. They are printing it. When it is ready it will be compiled and sent here,” he added.

He said the elections will be free and fair, noting that IEC has been conducting elections without fear or favour since 1996. “If people vote for you, you win; if they don’t vote for you, you lose. We conduct elections in a very transparent manner,” he said.
