L-Members,
I have just received a phone call from Basse informing me about the
U.D.PARTY leadership and supporters been attacked.
As you may recall, it was reported on the Daily Observer few days back that
the U.D.P leader Ousainou Darboe and fifty party supporters started a meet
the people tour last friday.According to the caller, the tour was going fine
and very successful when these thugs attacked them.
The defunct 22nd July movement thugs in Basse loaded a full truck & went and
attacked the U.D.Party convoy at sotuma and Kabakama villages. The incidents
claimed the life of one Alieu Njie a member of the defunct movement and left
many more members wounded. The attacked is said to be orchestrated by Alhagie
Banta Camara 2nd vice chairman of the APRC in Basse and URD assistant
commissioner Mr.Bojang who was prior to his appointment as assistant
commissioner was among the leaders of the defunct 22nd July movement.
All these actions are well calculated by the dictator -Yahya Jammeh to
frustrate the efforts of the UDP and Gambians at all level. But,this incident
though, unfortunate, will sent a signal of response to the nefarious and
undemocratic Government what action the people will take anytime their
rights are violated.
UDP is a national party with a country-wide base and to keep the momentum of
political education and mobilisation the party is under obligation to
undertake countrywide tours in pursuance of its political agenda within the
confine of the law. These include meetings at grssroots level and
constituencies level.
This incident remind me of the illegal systematic practice of abbitary
arrest and torture of UDP supporters during both the presidential and
national assembly elections campaign.UDP supporters were atimes attacked and
beaten by police or members of the national army using rifle butts, batons
and other weapons. In one of the occations,Mrs Sarjo Kunja Sanneh,a female
supporter sustained injuries on her private parts inflicted by men from the
presidential guard and NIA.No one sould be taken by surprise about these
crimes happening today because the order is directly coming from the
dictator who in one of his meetings in Lamin village said he will
imprison, kill, destroy, cut to pieces and pound in a mormar all those who
oppose him.
From what happened yesterday, and other numerous incidents to be mentioned
here, it is quite evident that The Gambian people continue to experience
gross violations of human rights.Yahya Jammeh's regime has not changed its
military character. He is practicing on militocracy.
I appeal to all peace loving people, commited to the the respect of human
rights and the rule of law to be aware of the true nature and character of
Yahya Jammeh and his regime. The dress has changed but all else remain the
same.
I therefore, appeals to all those who believe in democracy and freedom to
condemn and denounce the thugs action.

Best regaeds,
Saihou
