Deyda’s Last Speech

  Mr Ambassador, we are very pleased to receive you here at The Point especially today when we celebrate 13 years of existence. Mr Ambassador, 13 is said to be a fateful number but we are serene and confident that our 13 years of existence would be a meaningful one in our life as a newspaper.
  We are also sad that you are visiting us when the media, particularly the independent media, is the subject of an unwarranted assault in its independence with the passing into law of some anti-press laws by the National Assembly.
  The reason for such a sad development is a simple one for you are from the country that set the standards of modern journalism. Therefore, we should naturally familiarize Your Excellency with such an issue.
  Talking about your government, we say that the US is a superpower that is looked upon with respect, envy, fear and hatred owing to its recent foreign policy options. Our newspaper has been in the centre of such debate through the stance it adopted in accordance with the precepts that people like Pulitzer taught.
