Subject: [AfricaMatters] An Open Appeal to Endorse and Help Build an
International Day of Action Against Racism (IDAAR) on 31 August 2001!

Dear Sisters, Brothers and Comrades:

For the past year, progressive and revolutionary forces, movements,
organizations and activists in every corner of the world have been
organizing to ensure grass-roots participation in the World Conference
against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance
(WCAR) that will be held in Durban, South Africa from 31 August to 7
September 2001. The proposed motto for the World Conference is “United
to Combat Racism: Equality, Justice and Dignity”.

Hundreds of NGO's worldwide, have already registered to participate in
the Non-Govenmental Organizations (NGO) Forum that will take place from
28 August-1 September. Thousands of youth worldwide are organizing as
we speak, to attend the Youth Summit that is planned for the 27-28
August. All of these events will take place in Durban, South Africa.

Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of the masses of exploited and
oppressed peoples of the world will not be able to go to Durban,
especially the peoples and youth of color who historically and currently
bear the brunt of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related
intolerance.

Over the past year, a host of progressive and revolutionary movements,
organizations and activists in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, the Western
Hemisphere and Europe have been discussing, independent of each other,
the necessity and possibility of organizing an International Day of
Action against Racism (IDAAR) on August 31, 2001.

We have just had the privilege, on behalf of the Kwame Ture Work-Study
Institute and Library, to tour a number of college campuses and
conferences throughout the United States. At each stop on our tour, we
found overwhelmingly positive support for this proposed International Day
of Action against Racism (IDAAR). Many exciting and challenging
suggestions and proposals have emerged, from militant and mass local
actions to a worldwide stay-at-home campaign, from "teach-ins" and "
rap-ins" to worldwide internet and tv simulcasts.

All of the forces, movements, organizations and activists with whom we
have talked agree that peoples, communities, movements and organizations
of color must be in the leadership of IDAAR. The overwhelming majority
also agree that participation in IDAAR must be open to all peoples and
forces in the world who truly seek justice and peace.

Osagefyo Kwame Nkrumah never tired of saying that there are moments in
history that are hard to discern, yet fatal if let slip by. We believe
that this is one
such moment in history.

On August 31, 2001 the exploited and oppressed peoples of the world must
and can take their destiny into their own hands!

The Kwame Ture Work-Study Institute and Library takes this opportunity to
appeal to all progressive and revolutionary forces, movements,
organizations and activists in every corner of the world to endorse and
help build an International Day of Action Against Racism (IDAAR) on 31
August 2001. We ask that you email your suggestions and proposals, so
that they might be considered, as the worldwide effort to organize and
coordinate IDAAR crystalizes and takes shape and form over the next few
days and weeks.

The struggle continues and intensifies!!!
