Two Reported Killed in Border Clash, Gov't Blamed for "Concealing the Truth"

The Independent (Banjul)

Banjul

Unconfirmed reports reaching The Independent suggest that two Gambian
football fans were shot and killed by Senegalese during a fight that ensued
at the border villages of Karang and Amdalaye as part of the ongoing tension
between peoples of the two countries following riotous scenes in Dakar
during and after the Scorpions-Lions match.

Enraged Gambian eyewitnesses stormed the office of The Independent Wednesday
to accused the Gambian authorities of "trying to cover up the facts" about
the deaths of two fans in the hands of the Senegalese.

They maintained that the nation was being deceived by the government over
what happened on Saturday. The government has denied that there were any
deaths following the Dakar incident, which sparked riotous scenes in Banjul
its surrounding suburbs and Farafenni. The government's alleged reluctance
"to reveal the truth" was reportedly aimed at dousing the flames of Gambian
anger and anti-Senegalese sentiments and restore calm and normalcy.

According to them, the incident involving the two Gambian fans happened at
about 11 O' Clock on Saturday, and that their corpses were ferried in to the
country by a GPTC School bus, registered as KM 9644 and the driver
identified as Adama Ndure. One of the eyewitnesses who is a girl student at
Muslim Senior Secondary School, had shown injuries to her body she claimed
she sustained from gunshots. She told The Independent that one of the
victims was residing in Bakau and she was part of the bus convoy that
ferried the bodies into the country.

"We are disappointed that the authorities would conceal this from the
nation", they said, expressing fear of the fate of two others (a boy and a
girl) who were also fatally injured. She said judging by their injuries,
which they sustained from the Dakar rampage, it was possible that they may
have died in Dakar.

Meanwhile, The Independent has reliably learnt that the Gambian convoy had
three hours delay in Karang when they were crossing into Senegal between 12
and 3 o' clock on Friday night. This was reportedly due to the fact that the
Senegalese Custom officials were demanding the payment of lessez passes from
all Gambian vehicles crossing into Senegal at the time.

Reports also confirmed that the post-match situation in Dakar was calm until
Sunday when there was no reported attack on Gambians in Dakar.
