Dear All & SundryIt is a welcome news to set aside a day to remembers "Mothers". Mothers are important for various. reasons Mothers have undertaken a social physiological duty (pregnancy and childbirth) by bringing us into this world. Mothers are invaluable resources to family, community & society. They plant, harvest, cook the food in most part of the world; care for the children and family including the sick and elderly most often free of cost. These are indispensable contribution to national, local, domestic and international economy but most often missed in economic statistics.

Mothers are also important for their intrinsic link with child health, survival and school performance. A child who lost his/her mother most often does not survive his/her second birthday, if he/she does survive mostly do no go to school. The few that managed to go to school often poorly perform. Thus celebrating mothers day is justified and i commend the organizers.

Let me also hasten to state the social and physiological duty undertaken by mothers is not risk free. Every year up to 529000 women die of pregnancy or childbirth related complications. Most (99%) of these occur in developing countries and mainly in sub-saharan Africa. In our natal country, The Gambia, the recent WHO estimates indicated that the maternal mortality ratio is 690/100000 live births (range 250 - 1500). Put in another way for every 32 pregnant women one will die. This is striking. Thus i will urge mothers in this celebration to reflect on this situation and think in what small way they can make a difference back home. I have no doubt that you can and will do something.

Thank you

And thier wives, who may be mothers too.... ( you probably make them feel special everyday anyway) But it is just very nice, that a day has been set aside to remember us. So even though we may not recognise this day very much, back home, That phone call to Mama to let her know you are thinking?About her,?will definately put a smile on her face. For those of us whose Mothers have passed away, remembering the great things she did for you and the unconditional love she provided, as well as prayer.. that should make your day.> HAPPY MOTHERS DAY Everyone!!!!!!!> > Fatou D..> > $B!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"(B> To unsubscribe/subscribe or view archives of postings, go to the Gambia-L Web interface> at: http://listserv.icors.org/archives/gambia-l.html> > To Search in the Gambia-L archives, go to: http://listserv.icors.org/SCRIPTS/WA-ICORS.EXE?S1=gambia-l> To contact the List Management, please send an e-mail to:> [log in to unmask]> $B!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"!"(B>
