Unita Rebels Sold Diamonds Worth 4 Billion DollarsUnita Rebels Sold Diamonds Worth 4 Billion Dollars
June 27, 2000

BRASILIA, Brazil (PANA) - The Angolan rebel group, Unita, has earned four billion US dollars from diamonds trafficking since the country's first civil war broke out after Angola's independence in 1975, according to the Brazilian paper "Correio Braziliense."

The revelation comes in the eve of the world's diamond congress in the first fortnight of July in Antwerp, Belgium, to analyse issues linked to the mineral and its illegal trading on the international market.

The Angolan news agency quoted the paper, published in the Brazilian federal capital, as saying part of the amount served to maintain the second war up to now.

Under the headline "Arms for Diamonds", the article written by Pilar Marcos quoted the recent World Bank report titled the "Natural Riches That Feed Civil Wars Around The World."

It said the worth obtained from the illegal sale of diamonds was behind Jonas Savimbi's arrogance and persistence pursuing the logic of war.
