Nigerian legislators sued for corruption

ABUJA, Aug 16 (AFP) - The heads of Nigeria's bicameral legislature have
been sued over allegations of corruption, court officials said Friday.
Anyim Pius Anyim, who presides over the senate, or upper house of
parliament, and Umar Ghali Na'Abba, Speaker of the House of
Representatives, have been sued by Godwin Dabo 'Adzuana, a member of the
ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) over allegations that they
deliberately trebled the cost of a water project and then pocketed the
difference.
'Adzuana claims in the suit, which he has presented to a court in the
capital, that Anyim was unable to justify his vast wealth and properties he
owns in the capital Abuja.
Samuel Onazi Obande, a PDP member of the lower house of parliament has
similarly petitioned a government-backed anti-corruption commission over
allegations that Na'Abba was engaged in reckless spending and illegal
enrichment.
"I have absolute confidence that you will discover a case of gross and
unjust enrichment, illegal withdrawal of public funds, extra-budgetary
spending and official corruption," Obande said in the petition.
Since it was set up by President Olusegun Obasanjo in June 1999, the
commission has yet to prosecute any top official over corruption, with many
Nigerians ridiculing it as a lame duck operation.
