Your Prestigious Award Reflects Concerns Around the World -Movement for

BY STAFF WRITER

October 12, 2005
The New York based Movement for Democracy and Development has praised
Independent's Managing Editor Alagi Yorro Jallow for his commitment to
press freedom.

The commendation was contained in a letter sent to Mr. Jallow by the
Chairman of the pro-democracy group Saihou Mballow, who congratulated
Yorro on his recent media award. Below is the full text of Mr. Mballow's
letter to Yorro Jallow, a one time Gambia Press Union President. Please
read on....

Movement for Democracy and Development in The Gambia (NY) Congratulates
Mr. Alagi Yorro Jallow for the (CJFE) Press Freedom Award.

Dear Alagi Yorro Jallow,

On behave of the Movement for Democracy and Development; with great honor
I congratulate you on being named the recipient of the Canadian
Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) Press Freedom award. This award has
a special significance to The Gambia journalism at the time that the
Government is killing and disappearing people, including Journalists. And
eventually you are among the best working people, who are fighting for
press freedom in the country to prevail.

As a recipient of this award, Mr. Jallow, you are being recognized for
your commitment to the main principles of democratic society. One of the
absolutely essential principles of democracy is the right of the people to
receive uncensored information and the obligation of journalists to
provide such information.

During the 11years of the (APRC) regime, we have seen and still seeing
Gambian Journalists arrested and put into custody for doing their duties
well. We have seen newspapers and private radio station closed on charges
that would be considered completely ridiculous in any democratic society.
We have seen draconian laws passed in The Gambia that encroach on the
right of the people to receive accurate information.

But, in each of these situations, we have seen your efforts of absolutely
consistent and relentless efforts to bring out what was happening in the
society and to stand up to the government endeavors to jeopardize freedom
of the press.

Your prestigious award reflects concerns around the world about the
situation in the Gambia and international awareness of the hardships that
journalists in the Gambia face.

The Movement is thankful to the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression
(CJFE) in recognition of your achievement as a recipient of this great
award. You are a force to reckon with, carrying out the noble work of
upholding freedom of the press and professionalism solidarity.

My highest compliments to you,

Saihou Mballow
Chairman
