The basic problem that underline a repressive governance atmosphere, is
when power is centered around an individual, and that power therefrom
devolves to all other sectors of the governing system. If power is
centered around an individual, and all the mechanics of governance bear
his stamp of authority, there is then the tendency to build a culture of
acquiescene to this individual. The result therefore is a personality
cult, listlessness and all the other attributes that negates a vibrant
democratic tradition, and a strong and principled advocacy for the rule
of law.

If a president is given the power, or he gives himself the power, to
hire and fire those who interpret the law; to influence and control those
who make the law, and directs and induces those who execute the law,
then obviously there arises an issue of loyalty. Hence time and again,
loyalty to the wishes of a president supercedes the dictates of one's
principles to a common interest. Hence time and again, the desire to
follow a president's bidding overrides the dictates of one's conscience
to perform a public obligation. This is the travesty that the conscience
of a whole nation is hold to ransom by the acts of one person; a person
raised to a pedestal that defies the humility, the humbleness that calls
to attention our human limitations and mortality.
