Yankuba Jambang, a second year student of the University of The Gambia, has
been nominated "Poet of the Year 2002," to contest for this year's Amateur
Poetry Competition in Washington DC, on August 23.

In an interview with the Daily Observer, Mr Jambang said he had earlier
this year entered the contest organised by the International Library of
Poetry and has now been nominated as "Poet of the Year 2002," by the
International Society of Poets (ISP).

He will be contesting for a grand cash prize of $20,000, he said,
adding "It is a pride for me to be nominated Poet of the Year 2002, and I
am aiming to win the Grand Prize in order to promote the image of the
University and The Gambia, since the contest draws participants from all
over the world," he said.

Mr Jambang noted that his poem The Worlds will be featured in the anthology
of the International Library of Poetry and he is also among the 33 poets
whose poems will be recorded on CDS.

"The world ," according to Mr Jambang, "is a poem that looks at the
instability of the world due mainly to ideological, economic and political
differences between countries." The Worlds and other poems of Mr Jambang,
among them, The Graveyard Dancers, The Nileman, and Pilgrimage to the
Augustinian House have all been published by the Daily Observer.

It could be recalled that Mr Jambang worked as a freelance journalist for
the Daily Observer and Citizen FM Radio from 1997 to 2000 before joining
the University of The Gambia.

When contacted to shed light on the issue, Lamin F Jaiteh, Assistant
Registrar, University of The Gambia said Mr Jambang's wonderful achievement
shows that the university is producing good students.

"The talent that has been hidden among the students will now sell the
university's name throughout the world," he said.

Dr Boro Suso, coordinator, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the
university, said he was not surprised when he heard of this wonderful
performance from Mr Jambang, because he was a very good student.

He said Yankuba Jambang's performance is excellent, adding that he has lots
of potentials to deliver if he is given the chance. "His merit is not only
for the University of The Gambia but for the whole country," he said.
