President Jammeh Warns Gambians to Change Eating Habit!!!
President Jammeh Warns Gambians to Change Eating Habit
By Correspondent Fatou Jallow, Banjul
Banjul:8/23/08-As the price for a bag of rice continues to rise at an
astronomical pace each day in The Gambia, President Yahya Jammeh has issued a
strongly-worded statement calling on the 1.5 million Gambian population to change
their eating habit. According to President Jammeh, there are lots of foods
in the country such as maize, coos and cassava that Gambians can avail
themselves with, describing the above three as healthy and nutritious diets.
The Gambian leader's call came hot on heels of speculations that the price
for a bag of rice will rise to D1,300 by next month and possibly to D 1,500 by
 December.
Mr. Jammeh complained that Gambians eat rice too much. "Many Gambian
households eat rice for lunch, dinner and break, causing a heavy demand for it. But
when we change our eating habit that would help reduce the price of rice to a
bearest minimum," he posited
While renewing his clarion call for Gambians to take agriculture seriously.

According to our correspondent, since the beginning of the year, many people
in the country have been and continued to find it tough to feed their
families owing to the sky high price for rice and other basic commodities.
A civil servant who spoke to this medium says because of his meager salary
he now finds it impossible for his family to enjoy three decent meal a day.
"It will be a disaster for me if the price of rice goes higher than it is
now. We want the government to intervene because we are suffering," said a
police officer who prefers anonymity.
Momodou Hydara, a resident of Brufut asserted that Gambians must blame
themselves for the current economic hardship in the country because in his view ‘
they voted in office a government whose only preoccupation is to build
elephant projects and to engage in day dreaming '. For Hydara wasteful spending of
public funds by the President and his cohorts must stop if ' we are to achieve
any meaningful growth'. He added that the Gambia government much-hyped
blueprint vision 2020 will remain a pipe dream as long as the Jammeh
administration continues to squander the tax payers hard-earned monies.
Meanwhile, at the time of going to press it has been wildely rumoured in
Banjul that the country is likely to be hit by rice shortage in the coming
weeks. This, according to our contacts, is due to the fact that some rice dealers
have started hoarding the much-needed goods with a view to create artificial
scarcity of the product.
