Subject: Man Shot Dead Outside Mandela Home in Cape Town, Former President Not Home
MADIBA SHOCKED AT SHOOT-OUT
16/03/2004 21:22 - (SA)
Mandela's house attacked
Cape Town - Former president Nelson Mandela was "completely
shocked" to learn about a shoot-out outside his Cape Town
residence that claimed the life of an attacker on Tuesday,
said his spokesperson Zelda la Grange.
Senior superintendent Selby BOKABA said a man had been shot
dead during an exchange of gunfire outside Mandela's
BISHOPSCOURT residence. Mandela was not home at the time.
BOKABA said three men driving a red Fiat UNO appeared at the
former president's house after 17:00, asking if it was the
residence of Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
"The three men walked to the gate and spoke to an official
who told them it was not Tutu's house, but they insisted it
was.
"The men said they needed to speak to Tutu or MADIBA,
claiming they had information about people planning to
disrupt the upcoming elections."
The official radioed for his superiors. The men walked back
to their vehicle.
When the official and his superiors returned, a man standing
at the gate ran towards the car and returned with an R-5
rifle.
Two others being questioned
"He tried to cock the rifle and aimed it at the officials
standing at gate, opening fire on them. The officials
returned fire and the man was shot dead."
The officials chased the red UNO no and caught the other two
men. They were in police custody and being questioned.
The dead man's identity could not be revealed until his next-
of-kin had been informed.
No one else was injured during the shoot-out. The motive for
the incident was unknown.
BOKABA said there had been no threat against the former
president.
He was noncommittal on whether police were going to beef up
security around Mandela's house.
La Grange said: "The safety of Mr. Mandela, his family and
staff is paramount to us all.
"The police service is investigating the matter and we are
confident they will deal with it diligently and in an
appropriate manner."
Asked whether Mandela's office had any idea about the
identity of the attackers, she said they had "no idea", but
police were interviewing those detained.
'Mandela is a living treasure'
Democratic Alliance leader Tony Leon said his party was
shocked at the attack.
"We are relieved to learn that former President Mandela was
not in residence at the time. We support the police in their
efforts to get to the heart of this disturbing incident.
"Violence and intimidation are completely unacceptable in our
democracy.
"Nelson Mandela is a living treasure of South Africa and he
deserves the highest security measures available.
"We hope he is undeterred in his continued service to our
nation."
