Your context suggests "definitely implausible" and that of course is the valid legal position pursuant to the 1997 Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia, at 100(2)(a).

  Specifically:

"The National Assembly shall not pass a Bill - to establish a one party state"

Grounding Dibba's "matyrdom" in a defence of democracy rationale is quite unpersuasive. As an extension of the Executive, the APRC-conrolled National Assembly is perfectly capable of going down the one party route, the constitutional stricture notwithstanding. However, even the APRC NAM's would recognise that the logical point of departure would be to launch some form of assault on 100(2)(a) to remove the serious impediment on their path. They simply cannot ignore the requisite process and casually arrive at the terminus of the journey by declaring a one party state. Dibba as the gaurdian of pluralism is a laughable proposition!

The tragedy of Dibba's condition is the human cost integral to his plight in the form of suffering admirers, friends and family. As to his credentials vis-a-vis the rule of law, well ...........................

Whatever political clout Dibba had suffered quite a battering over the years, his currency now virtually debased.

Even to the best connected of Gambians, there is no durable alternative to cultivating a political culture grounded in the rule of law.

In such a culture - a government not of men but of laws - lies our individual and collective dignity

Is that too radical a notion to embrace, nurture, and celebrate?

I think one has to point out that any legislation for a ONE-PARTY STATE has to be approved by the PEOPLE through a REFERENDUM. Please find time and read the 1997 Constitution.

So this buisness of Churchill Baldeh calling for a one-party state is definitely plausible.

Good weekend

Comrades:

This is to confirm that Sheriff Mustapha Dibba has been released without
any charges. During a meeting with APRC representatives, majority
leader Baldeh, with support from many members, called for a
one-party state. Mr. Dibba opposed this idea and called it undemocratic
and crazy.

Well, after their meeting, majority leader Baldeh, together with some of
his thugs in the House of Representatives visited Jammeh. They said and
I quote: "Mr. President, Sheriff is not on your side." This was when
Jammeh called for his arrest.

Truth is that Mr. Dibba was trying to defend democracy and rule of law.
We would have been harmed seriously if he(Mr. Dibba) had not say anthing.
It is now possbile for Mr. Baldeh to successfully introduce this bill in
the House.

I believe with all sincerity that Mr. Dibba has to join the opposition. If
we love our country and want to see a democratic Gambia, we should
make friends with our enemies, especially at this critical moment in
our country's history. Though politics is strange, one has to swallow
his or her pride for the benefit of democracy.

Naphiyo,
Comrade Jassey-Conteh
