YET ANOTHER CORRUPTION REPORT AGAINST YAHYA AND HIS GOV'T-TRANSPARENCY
INTERNATIONAL AT WORK
Octoger 21, 2005
A very shocking corruption report against poor Gambia. Transparency
International is hitting hard on Yahya and his government. Transparency
International is saying that there is institutionalised corruption in
Yahya's government. That this government is not keen at tackling graft.
That Yahya and his cohorts are bent on enriching themselves at the expense
of poverty stricken Gambians. Che! What a shame.

The transparency report is revealing. Yahya and his inner circles, have
been exposed beyond reasonable doubt. If this was a democratic government,
they will resign without delay. But Yahya is not democratic. His
preoccupation is to enrich himself and not to improve the plights of
impoverished Gambians.

Yahya, all is yours now. You have succeeded in ruining our economy in a
span of 11 years in the name of effecting change. You will reap what you
saw. Transparency says you don't practice what you preaches-that your
previous rantings that your government had zero tolerance for corruption
were mere lies and deception.

Hear this section of the Transparency damning report "The absence of an
anti-corruption strategy, The poor conditions of service for public
officers coupled with a spiralling inflation and static salaries that make
it difficult for most public servants to maintain a decent standard of
living. The overwhelming dominance of the President in all aspect of
government which encourages political patronage. The arbitrary exercise of
power particularly in respect to hiring and firing public servants."

Jammeh what do you make out of this statement? Is this not a vote of no
confidence against your reckless and irresponsible government? Come on
Jammeh..... It is time to call it a day, since you are not competent to
steer the affair of the state. As we told you the other day, change is
inevitable in The Gambia. Come rain, come shine, you must go. Your days
are numbered.

Gambian voters cannot afford to feed and maintain such a corrupt leader.
You are not representing the common good, but your personal interest. For
the first time in living memory, that our nation is painted in such a
picture. Going by the Transparency report, The Gambia is now competing
with top corrupt countries across the globe. This is no exaggeration. This
is the reality.

The most disturbing aspect of the Transparency report is the section
talking about IMF's sanction against The Gambia. The report went on to
states "IMF has suspended it cooperation with The Gambia and has strongly
objected to the distorted figures presented to it by the Central Bank of
The Gambia (it is feared by many that other donors would follow IMF's
position); Institutions created by both the Constitution and statutes to
ensure good governance, transparency, accountability and probity lack
capacity and moral courage to carry out their functions and have been
seriously undermined."

Yahya, your credibility as a leader is not only questioned locally, but
internationally. This report is very embarrassing and any government that
worth its salt will not hesitate to relinquish power without delay, in
view of such an exposure. Try and hand over the country to a credible care
taker transitional government before it is too late. There is no way that
you can defend such an indicting corruption report against your
government.

We at The ALLGAMBIAN are today vindicated, because some misguided Jammeh
supporters thought that the corruption charges we have been levelling
against Jammeh and his government were mere charges without merit. The
Transparency report speaks volumes about the current corruption and
maladministration taking place in Yahya's government.

What is FJC's stake on this embarrassing report? Will FJC celebrate about
the Transparency report as she did on the Amnesty so called rights report
on Gambia? We doubt it very much. As we publish this corruption report
against Yahya and his government today, one of the indictees in the person
of Baba K Jobe or "bourr Jobe is languishing in jail. His fellow co
conspirators betrayed him, as the kitchen appeared hot for them. They
thought that the best way to bring sanity in the country was to sacrifice
Jobe and Lang. We are not implying that the two were not corrupt. Our
contention here is that, Jammeh, is not more clean than Jobe and lang.
Jammeh used to dine on the same table with the two. For some reasons, he
decided to disown them. But the truth will prevail sooner or later.

We want to commend Transparency International for publishing such an
informative corruption report. We hope and pray that Gambia's younger
generation and future generations will learn from such a report to avoid
following the foot steeps of Yahya and his government. Corruption is
endemic in our country. We need to fight it at all cost. God save The
Gambia from these blood shockers and greedy politicians. We rest our case.
