Convinced that they face impending defeat on the 18 of October, Yahya Jammeh
and his gang of thieves and murderers are now singularly focused on how to
compromise or outright disrupt a verdict they know would be clear and
overwhelming. They cannot win under any scenario that relies on a legal
casting and counting of votes. Even if they load government vehicles with one
billion Dalasis and set out to buy votes along the length breadth of the
nation, the underlying resentment for this band of thugs is so high and deep
that they would fail. They also know that an orchestrated campaign of terror
directed by the government would be met with a very vigorous and determined
resistance from hundreds of thousands of people. Violence which uptill
recently has been a vicious trump card this regime believes it can use to
bludgeon it's opponents into submission will result in swift and sure
outcome. They will loose. The reason is no security apparatus has ever
succeeded in suppressing a significant majority of a nation insisting on
change. We also know that three quarters of the Gambian security services
feel equally put upon by a brutal regime who has stacked the ranks of their
leadership with wicked and utterly unqualified lackeys with only personal and
tribal loyalties to Yahya and his cronies. They will not attack honorable
Gambians retaking their government period. The task is to ensure that the will
of the Gambian people is upheld and to do whatever is necessary to validate
their wishes. They already know that their political opponents will not cower
under threat. They have said they will not settle for anything less than a
clear and undisputed verdict. Yahya has announced he will basically impose
his unscrupulous will. With the preponderance of power firmly in the hands of
the majority, October 18 would determined if Gambia would consign itself to
the dictates of a murderous regime or make a clear break from this dark and
sorry chapter. There would be no second chances or compromises.
All of the desperate acts designed to placate selected groups is a clear
manifestation of a regime unsure of what it could do cling unto power. They
apparently believe public relations gimmicks particularly purported gift
givings would help burnish the image of a despised regime. Personal gifts of
trucks to the army? It does nothing to address the important and festering
problems of the army which is the fact they have become a corrupted
institution in which honest and hardworking people who are loyal to their
nation and it's people are suppressed and passed over for leadership in favor
of cronies of the regime. 'Col' Jatta and his clique of undeserving army
leadership cannot and will not be able to exercise command authority in any
attempt to suppress the people. The same is true for the police. So all the
parade you see on television of these crooks pretending to be responsible
leaders salivating over dubious gifts are as shallow and superfluous as the
GRTS commentary covering it.
List members and the whole world should know that change is
inevitable. The manner in which the change comes and the responsibility for
any outcome squarely rests on the choices this creul regime makes. If they
choose to unleash violence in a bid to cling unto power, they in the grace of
God shall be defeated. If on the other hand they choose to operate
uncharacteristically and conduct a free and fair contest, then the Gambians
people reach their objective at the preferred price. Either way the nation
would rid itself of an especially destructive blight and start anew with a
strong commitment to democracy and the rule of law.
