37 arrested for not wearing life jackets

Fire service officers in Bakau yesterday arrested 37 people sailing on a
boat bound for Senegal without life jackets.

Gibril Nying, divisional Fire service Officer in Bakau, said his men were
merely executing orders passed on the safety of passengers on the sea.

“This has been announced on the radio and TV many times, Nying said. He
said those arrested included 11 crewmembers who are in police custody in
Banjul.
He said it would be ‘suicidal’ for these people to travel on the boat for
seven hours or more to Senegal without life jackets.

“The Joola accident has raised concern about safety at sea and nothing
would be compromised,” the fire officer said.

People on the beached welcomed the action of the fire service officers,
saying it was a life saving move.
