VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT: POST OF VICE-CHANCELLOR

1. Preamble

The University of The Gambia, established by an Act of The National Assembly
in March 1999, is The Gambia’s first University. Its academic programmes are
in four broad Faculties of:

Humanities and Social Sciences

Economics and Management Sciences

Science and Agriculture as well as

Medicine and Allied Health Sciences.

The University started full operations in the year 2000 with a current
enrolment figure of over 400 students and about 40 full and part-time
Faculty members. The University is about to complete its first full academic
session.

The University of The Gambia is expected to be development-oriented and
committed to excellence in teaching, learning and research.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for URGENT
appointment as Vice-Chancellor.

2.Profile Of The Person

The successful candidate shall be totally fluent in English and will:

Be of full professorial rank with relevant internationally recognised
credentials in management at a senior level in a university;

Have experience in the establishment and management of universities in
developing Sub-Saharan African countries;

Have a solid proven university teaching and research background,
demonstrated leadership and managerial competence;

Have a broad range of international contacts; and Possess excellent personal
qualities such as vision, integrity, initiative, team
building spirit, dedication, etc.

Proven ability to mobilise both financial, technical etc. resources.

3. Duties Of The Post

The Vice-Chancellor under the direction of the University Council, is the
Academic Head and Chief Executive Officer of the University responsible for
leadership, management, and development of the University and the
realisation of its mission.
