BANJUL, Aug 22 (AFP) - Gambia on Thursday appealed for 27
million dollars (euros) in international aid to deal with a severe
drought-induced food shortage.
Lack of rain has wiped out the country's rice harvests, has
destroyed 60 percent of its millet harvest, and 40 percent of its
peanut harvest, Vice President Isatou Njie-Saidy said, adding that
the country's maize harvest and livestock had also been affected by
the drought.
People in the west African nation's countryside were already
suffering from malnutrition, she said.
On August 9, neighboring Senegal called also called for
international aid to help it stave off famine in the countryside
because of the drought.
