According to reports coming from Dakar the capital of Senegal, voters are
heading for a second round in the presidential elections for the first time
in the country's history.
With about 95% of the votes counted, President Abdou Diouf's ruling party -
The Socialist Party (PS) won 43%, well short of the 50% needed. The main
opposition  " Coalition Alternance 2000" led by the veteran Abdoulie Wade
scored about 31%, and the former foreign minister Mustapha Niass's Alliance
of the Forces of Progress came third with almost 17% of the votes.
The Date staged for the second round presidential election is 19 March.
