Subject: SSRC Africa RAP Roundtable (ASA 2002)

 ANNOUNCEMENT
The Africa Regional Advisory Panel (RAP) of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) invites you to attend a sponsored roundtable at the 2002 African Studies Association (ASA) annual conference in Washington, D.C. The roundtable is entitled Mapping the Social Sciences in Africa: Agendas, Capacities, Constraints, Possibilities, and will take place on Thursday, December 5, 2002 12:45P.M – 2:45P.M. The roundtable will feature the presentation of a major study of social knowledge production in Africa conducted by Dr. Ebrima Sall of the Nordic Africa Institute and a former Program Officer at CODESRIA. The study was commissioned by the SSRC as part of a global analytical inventory of social science research priorities and capacities around the world.

For the roundtable, Dr. Sall will summarize the results of the study, including the shifting relationship between social science research and African states, transformations in research agendas of African scholars and institutions, the political economy of social knowledge production, and diversification of the institutional sites of this production in the region.

In order to provide those interested in attending the panel with an opportunity to familiarize themselves in advance with the study, we have made the full version available at http://www.ssrc.org/programs/africa/publications/sallsocialsciences.doc.

Following Dr. Sall’s presentation, Michael Chege (Professor of Political Science and former Director of African Studies Program at the University of Florida, chair of the SSRC/ACLS Africa RAP) and Souleymane Bachir Diagne (Professor of Philosophy at Northwestern University, chair of CODESRIA’s Scientific Committee and member of the RAP) will provide brief comments, followed by an open discussion. Ron Kassimir, co-director of the SSRC’s Africa Program, will serve as chair.

This roundtable is the third in a series sponsored by the SSRC/ACLS Africa Program that calls attention to path-breaking new works in the social sciences and humanities by African scholars. The first roundtable took place at the 2000 ASA conference and focused on the study by Thandika Mkandawire and Charles Soludo entitled, “Our Continent, Our Future: African Perspectives on Structural Adjustment.” The 2001 roundtable, entitled “Claude Ake and Africa’s Democratic Possibilities” highlighted a post-humously published work by the late scholar and activist.
