Attacks shatter post-election calm in Gambia

BANJUL, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Supporters of Gambian President Yahya Jammeh
attacked the homes of opposition leaders just days after the former coup
leader won a second five-year term in a peaceful election, witnesses said on
Monday.

Security sources also said the representative of London-based human rights
group Amnesty International was detained on Monday after criticising the
government in a radio interview.

A witness in Brikama, east of the capital Banjul, told Reuters a mob of
Jammeh backers attacked the home of a United Democratic Party (UDP) leader on
Sunday and a People's Progressive Party (PPP) leader's house on Monday
morning.

Prominent human rights lawyer Oussainou Darboe formed a three-party coalition
made up of the UDP, PPP and the Gambia People's Party to unseat Jammeh but
came a distant second, just as he did in a disputed 1996 vote.

The coalition's campaign manager, Femi Peters, said supporters of Jammeh had
also attacked a third opposition leader's home in Brikama on Monday.

The campaign was marred by violence and police shot dead two opposition
demonstrators, but Thursday's vote passed without major incident and
observers gave it a clean bill of health.

Jammeh, who had threatened to shoot anyone disrupting the vote, told
supporters on Sunday he had forgiven his opponents for the "wrongs they have
committed."
