Subject: [AfricaMatters] Third World leaders to make a plan about debt

Third World leaders to make a plan about debt

August 14 2000 at 05:19PM

Abuja, Nigeria - Third World leaders will meet in London next week to discuss
how to press the case for debt rescheduling, after the failure last month of
the G8 summit to agree on action, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo said
Monday.

Speaking after a meeting with visiting Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez,
Obasanjo said "about five" Third World leaders would hold a "post-mortem" of
the Group of Eight summit of leading nations in Tokyo last month.

"Next week, about five of us are meeting in London for a day and a half to
relfect on what has happened and do a post-mortem and assess the situation
... and what will be the next line of action," he said.

The summit had global poverty relief as a major goal, but Obasanjo, South
Africa's President Thabo Mbeki and the leaders of Thailand and Algeria, who
were at the talks, failed to persuade the leaders of the rich industrialised
group to commit to debt reduction.

'We are not going to siphon the money into Swiss banks'
The Nigerian president, current chairman of the Group of 77 developing
nations, did not specify the five Third World leaders who would be meeting in
London.

"I don't believe the idea should be confrontational. The idea should be to
make our case and collectively," he said.

"The fact that these people are saying essentially the right thing is good
because if somebody is saying the right thing you can hold him to what he is
saying when the time comes," Obasanjo said, admitting to "disappointment"
with the outcome of the Japan summit.

"We must realise that we are not as weak or as powerless as we think.
Individually we are, collectively we are not," he said.

"We are not giving up ... but also we have to put our own houses together. We
have to be seen to be doing the right thing in terms of the management of our
affairs, politically, economically and socially," he went on.

"Then we can be able to say that, yes, if we get debt reduction, if we get
debt cancellation, we are going to use the money properly, we are going to
use the money to alleviate the poverty and suffering of our people, we are
not going to siphon the money into Swiss banks." - Sapa-AFP
