Lai Conteh arrested
Written by Ousman Darboe
Wednesday, 23 November 2005
The mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), Major Abdoulie Conteh
(rtd), was yesterday nabbed by personnel of the Serious Crime Unit at the
Banjul International Airport allegedly for subversive activities that pose
a threat to national security.

Police sources said the KMC mayor had been on the state’s list of wanted
people but could not be immediately arrested as he had travelled out of
the country. But when the police got a tip-off that Conteh was to arrive
at the airport yesterday, they quickly moved in to pick him up.

When the Daily Observer contacted the mayor’s wife, Amie Joof-Conteh, a
lawyer, she said: “We don’t know the reasons for his arrest. All what we
know is that he was arrested by three police sergeants at the airport
station, who told him that they were directed to arrest him. As he tried
to give me his bag, the police[sergeants] refused and carried him
physically to the Airport Police Station.”

She added that her husband was then taken to the Police Headquarters,
where he is being detained. According to her, Conteh’s official vehicle
was also impounded by the police and her husband is yet to be informed of
the reasons for his arrest.

Senior police officers confirmed Mayor Conteh’s arrest but declined to
comment.

In another development, the acting Registrar of the University of The
Gambia, Lamin Sam Jaiteh, was also confirmed arrested by the National
Intelligence Agency (NIA) last Sunday but was granted bail yesterday.
