STGDP PRESS RELEASE

It is unfortunate that as we prepare to mark the 5th anniversary of the senseless assasination of innocent students on April 10th and 11th, our country is yet again going through political turbulence, and in the final analysis it is poor Gambians who will bear the brunt of the consequences. The APRC government under Yaya Jammeh has created the conditions such that for the past eleven years, our country has been tiptoeing through land mines of political uncertainty.

In the absence of rule of law, and a Government focus on whatever it takes to stay in power, trampling the civil liberties of Gambians and the use of brute force to achieve objectives, the future of the Gambia will always remain precarious. The response from the Government after the alleged coup further demonstrates its total disregard for the protection of civil liberties of Gambians. STGDP urges the Government to respect the fundamental human and constitutional rights of the accused. The STGDP finds lining up alleged coupists on TV screens as an affront to democracy and due process under the law. All those under arrest should be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Secondly, we are condemning in the strongest terms in singling out the private media, yet again the Independent Newspaper and the targeting of its employees. STGDP is again urging the government to release with immediate effect these individuals to their families and to end all the harassment and intimidation of Gambians. The future of a stable and peaceful Gambia starts with the government demonstrating total commitment to democracy, rule of law and respecting the norms of a civilized society.
