History in the Making at the Texas State Democratic Convention

Texas- Muslim-Americans Win Big. At the Texas Democratic State
Convention held in Fort Worth, Texas on June 9-10, 2000, Muslims made
political history. Five (5) Muslim Americans were elected to the
Democratic National Convention. For the first time in history, a
Muslim-American
Woman was elected to a National Convention. In addition, we also won a
key
State Committee position and elected an officer of a major Senatorial
District.
THESE VICTORIES ARE HISTORIC. The results are as follows:

Selma F. Tameez - First Muslim female elected as a National
Delegate

Lutfi Hassan & - First Texas Muslim men elected
Zafar Tahir as Democratic National Delegates

Arif Razzack & - First Texas Muslim men elected as
     Syed Ahsani Democratic National Alternate-Delegates

Mustafa Iqbal Tameez - Texas Democratic Nominations Committee &
                             Vacancy Chair Senatorial District 17.

Nationwide there will be more than 4300 delegates to the Democratic
National Convention. Delegates represent the sole voting authority in
nominating the Democratic presidential candidate and the Democratic
party
platform. Furthermore, they are viewed by elected officials as the
party
faithful activists who bring new ideas and resources to the local, state

and national party.
