Public TV reporter freed after a week in secret police custody, then fired

Dodou Sanneh, a reporter employed by the 
state-owned Gambia Radio Television Services 
(GRTS), was freed yesterday and then fired from 
his job after being held for a week at the 
headquarters of the National Intelligence Agency 
(NIA) in Banjul. No charges were brought against 
him.

"Once again a Gambian journalist has been thrown 
in prison, manhandled and then released without 
any explanation," Reporters Without Borders said. 
"Once again, no protest was made by any of the 
countries with some kind of influence over 
Gambia. The cynicism and cruelty of President 
Yahya Jammeh's government is fed by the impunity 
he enjoys."

Sanneh was fired from his position as a GRTS 
reporter by director general Momodou Sanyang. At 
the time of his arrest, he was responsible for 
covering the presidential election campaign of 
the UDP-NRP-GPDP, one of the two opposition 
alliances. The election is to take place on 22 
September.

The authorities never gave any explanation for 
his arrested. Questioned by journalists while he 
was still being held, Fatoumata Jahumpa Ceesay, a 
pro-Jammeh parliamentarian, and a NIA official 
claimed that they knew nothing about the case.

Un journaliste de la radiotélévison publique 
libéré, puis licencié, après une semaine de 
détention au secret

Dodou Sanneh, journaliste de la chaîne publique 
Gambia Radio Television Services (GRTS), a été 
libéré le 14 septembre 2006 après une semaine de 
détention au quartier général de la National 
Intelligence Agency (NIA, services de 
renseignements) à Banjul.

"Une fois de plus, un journaliste gambien a été 
jeté en prison, malmené puis relâché sans 
explication. Une fois de plus, aucune 
protestation n'est venue des pays bénéficiant 
d'une quelconque influence sur la Gambie. Le 
cynisme et la cruauté du gouvernement de Yahya 
Jammeh est ainsi alimentée par l'impunité dont il 
bénéficie", a déclaré Reporters sans frontières.

Le journaliste a été renvoyé de son emploi au 
sein de la chaîne publique par le directeur 
général, Momodou Sanyang. Au moment de son 
arrestation, il était chargé de couvrir la 
campagne électorale pour l'élection 
présidentielle du 22 septembre de l'une des deux 
coalitions d'opposition, l'UDP-NRP-GPDP. Aucune 
explication n'a été fournie par les autorités sur 
son arrestation. Interrogés par la presse durant 
la détention du journaliste, Fatoumata Jahumpa 
Ceesay, députée proche du président Yahya Jammeh, 
ainsi qu'un responsable de la NIA, ont déclaré 
n'être pas au courant de l'affaire. Aucune charge 
n'a été portée contre Dodou Sanneh.
