Saiks,
I believe that the reaction against blacks in Libya had more to do
with the perception of their involvement in Libya as Qaddafi's
mercenaries than the the color of their skin. For years it was common
knowledge within and outside Libya, that Qaddafi employed mercenaries
and a disproportionate number of these are Africans. Given the
undisciplined nature of the rebellion it is understandable to see all
blacks being associated with mercenaries. I would dare say, had they
been Chinese, the reaction may have been the same. In America its
called racial profiling. Terrible as it is and very imprecise for most
part, its a common tool used by a fearful threatened population. In
short easy to see, easy to target.

The African Union for its part is and had been acting as if on
Qaddafi's interest. Apart from individual countries evacuating
citizens, I have not heard the African Union leading the way to
protect innocent blacks caught in the middle either by setting up safe
haven within Libya or working with both sides to allow for safe
passage. Now that Qaddafi is on the way out, I wonder how the
no-recognition stance would help convince Libyans that being black
does not equate to pro-Qaddafi.
