Alhaji,
Like Gunjur/Kunjur, it is hard to say what Banjul was originally called.
Francis Moore in his 1730 book - Travels to Interior Parts of Africa
wrote "Banyon" Point as opposite to Barra Point. Note that Moore wrote
this over 150 yrs after the first Europeans wrote about their encounter
with natives along the "Gambra" river. Fracis Bisset Archer in 1905 used
"Island of Banjole". Whether these have any bearing on how the island
got his name is left to interpreters.
The same can be said of Kaur, which was "Cower" by Moore and "Kau-ur" by
Archer.
