New York, July 18, 2006 United Democratic Party/ National Reconciliation Party (UDP/NRP) Alliance New York City would like to thank all of you, Gambians and friends of the Gambia for the support, citizen participation, expression of concerns, some genuine criticism that help to create a better understanding of the issues between Hon. Bah and the Diaspora during his short visit in the United States. Mr. Bah was invited by Gambians and friends of the Gambia. He arrived in the U.S. on July 6, 2006 and went back home after a week long visit.

During his visit, he held meetings with Gambians and friends of the Gambia in the following cities: Tennessee, North Carolina, Atlanta and New York City. In all of these meetings, Gambians candidly expressed their wishes for a united opposition, some expressed conflicting viewpoints with Mr. Bah concerning the lack of one ness among the
opposition, some questioned why mature opposition leaders should allow leadership issue to make them fail the Gambians they claimed fighting for to liberate over 10 years and some expressed their concerns over the issue of presidential term limit?.

Mr. Bah handled and responded positively to all the questions. He assured people that they will work according to the wishes of the majority. He accepted that all of them made a mistake by signing the MoU without consulting the electorate.

At the final days of Mr. Bah’s visit, what we understand from him in principle is that, now there is no leadership problem between UDP/NRP Alliance and NADD Party. And I believe Hon. Halifa Sallah’s response to Dr. Abdoulie Saine also expressed a similar point to that of Mr. Bah. Though, there are some important matters that still need to be discuss and it is normal and a healthy thing to do in a democratic culture.

President Yahya Jammeh’s caricature crisis, which is still evolving in its various dimensions, compels every Gambian in and abroad, including the opposition leaders, to self-reflect and reassess the level of commitment for “JAMMEH MUST GO”. With this so call Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) crisis it has become more evident that what we actually need now is a clear objective for dialogue and a defined process to achieve success, in order to enable our attempts to have tangible impact in dislodging the (APRC) regime.

The goal, as I would like to envisage, should be to reach a historical reconciliation between the UDP/NRP and NADD Party. This reconciliation can be achieved with political engagement between the parties having a stake in the dialogue process, and commitment by the media to support it. Without doing that, all the dialogue projects or Movements or any other attempts, whatever we may call them would not stand in the face of trying challenges. And if that happens, our political prisoners, brothers and sisters in Prison will never forgive us. All of us will be responsible and no body knows who is next to be arrested and send to join them in the coming days.

I would like to reiterate my happiness once more for taking your time to attend some of the meetings with Mr. Bah. The trip was very successful.

Finally, I would like to thank the following delegates who came all the way from other States to attend the NY meeting Mr. Ousman Manjang, Atlanta, Tuku Jallow DC, Mrs Daboe NJ and all others whom I didn’t mention.

A special thank goes to the Director of GDP Mr. Haruna Darboe, Dr. Abdoulie Saine and Lamin Darbo-UK who didn’t attend the meeting but working very hard for a united front against the dictatorship.

Bravo to the online Newspapers: Gambia post, Allgambian. net, Gambia Journal, Freedom Newspaper and Echo Gambia for keeping the general public inform AND ofcouse Gambia LIST.

  Thank you all.
