Sainey Jaiteh's hopes to contest in the September by-election in Serekunda Central Constituency have been dashed, after the APRC select committee selected Lai Sanyang.

However, the aggrieved Mr. Jaiteh whose blood runs with politics would not allow the matter to bite the dust. He questioned the credibility of the committee and accused it of being bias. Jaiteh said the said committee is bent on misleading the main APRC bureau. "They do this for their selfish interest," he told The Independent.

"The meeting that selected Lai was purposely for reconciliation and dialogue so that the mistake that happened in 2002 would not be repeated.

I left the meeting because I did not agree on terms with the Constituency Chairman, Kitim Gibba. So the so-called selection is not officially communicated to me. And I would not respect any decision made in my absence. The bias committee is responsible for the party's defeat in 2002," he alleged. "The committee deliberately ignored the main bureau's advice and went ahead to hand pick Lai Sanyang. I am ready to respect the outcome of a democratic, transparent and fair selection process and I will not mind rallying behind any chosen candidate for the race. But the APRC Secretariat should investigate the so-called selection process because we need to have the right match for Halifa whose political popularity and maturity must not be underrated."

Mr. Sainey, who had formerly stood for NCP in Sere Kunda East, was optimistic of sweeping the polls if his candidature had been approved. "By all means, my popularity and rich political experience are above board and I have the people behind me. And I have once defeated Halifa Sallah in election." However, Mr. Jaiteh said he is still loyal to the party and would not therefore vie as an independent candidate.

Meanwhile, the APRC candidate for Serekunda Central, Lai Sanyang also spoke to our reporter. He asked electorate to vote for him because his party has upgraded Lower Basic, build court house, hospital and market for the constituency. "Government will redouble its efforts if I win the seat," he said, adding that his primary agenda is to foster unity, understanding and cooperation among his people. "I therefore call on people to bury their past differences and forge ahead for betterment of the country," he said.

Mr. Sanyang said he respects his opponent, Halifa Sallah "but does not mean I fear him, despite his wealth of experience and background. I have been serving the interest of my people and moreover commands more support than the opposition in the constituency. So I am confident of winning the polls."

He said there are trying to spot out some "bad elements and opportunists" bent on creating problems for the party. "There was no division in my constituency. We have healed the misunderstanding among party supporters."
