Subject: Bush to visit Senegal

Bush to visit Africa in July - Senegal official

DAKAR, June 16 (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush will visit Senegal
next month on a long-planned tour of Africa, which was postponed in the
run-up to the war in Iraq, a senior Senegalese official said on Monday.

Overwhelmingly Muslim Senegal, a former French colony, is one of
Washington's best friends in West Africa and seen as a rare island of
stability as well as a shining example of democracy and economic reform.

Bush had originally been due to visit Africa in January, with stops expected
in Senegal, Kenya and South Africa, but the visit was put off during the
diplomatic storm ahead of the Iraq war.

The full itinerary for next month's tour was not immediately clear. U.S.
diplomats have not confirmed the visit.

"President Bush will be visiting Senegal on July 7 and 8. He has invited
eight heads of state from the sub-region to a summit here in Dakar. From
here we understand he will go to Pretoria," said the Senegalese official,
who asked not to be identified.

AIDS is expected to be high on the agenda during Bush's visit to the world's
worst-hit continent. Last month he signed into law a $15 billion plan to
help combat the disease in Africa and the Caribbean, tripling U.S. spending
over five years.

Regional diplomats say Africa is also becoming more of a focus of security
interest, both because of the danger that weak states could become breeding
grounds for terrorism and because of its growing importance as an oil
producer.
