NEWS
PRESIDENT JAMMEH CANCELS PLANNED FRIDAY PRAYERS IN NEW YORK, AMIDSTS REPORTS
OF POSSIBLE DEMONSTRATION
BY STAFF WRITER

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

September 17, 2005
President Yahya Jammeh's plans to pray at a Sarahule Mosque in New York City
on Friday, was cancelled following reports that there was a possible show
down action awaiting him to be spear headed by some concerned Gambians,
highly placed sources within his delegation informed the ALLGAMBIAN online
newspaper.

Jammeh who arrived here few days ago to attend the United Nations World
Summit was reported to send a word to the mosque elders in New York that he
and his delegation will pray there on Friday. However, some Gambians who
went to the mosque to confirm the veracity of Jammeh's planned visit to the
worshipping ground informed us that they know the hotel Jammeh is residing
and nothing will stop them from demonstrating as the United States is a free
country.

Sources say Jammeh is apparently avoiding Gambians in the US, as this time
round his visit is kind of a low key affair. His administration is very
unpopular here among the Gambian community. They have lamented the growing
misrule in the country characterised by what they called gross human rights
violations.

In 2003, a protest march in Washington DC organised by Gambians to condemn
his government's barbarism was successful, despite conflicting reports that
were being deliberately sent to the Gambian community by his so called
intelligence to save him from embarrassment, which was inevitable.

The ALLGAMBIAN has been reliably informed that numerous attempts made by Pa
Botou Sanneh, a supposedly close associate of the President to invite
Gambians to listen to Jammeh's lengthy sermons failed. This according to our
sources could not be possible as Mr. Sanneh was trying to censor opinions
perceived to be critical of the regime. Consequently, a majority of the
people he approached refused to meet the president.

Meanwhile, the would be demonstrators have reaffirmed their commitment to
organise a show down. "We know the hotel the delegation is residing, name
withheld for now, Unless and until he Jammeh cuts his trip short, we are
committed to fulfilling our planned demonstrations. The entries and exits
airport that Jammeh used had already been known. All we can say for now is
not JFK." said our sources.

Meanwhile, according to our sources "what is most embarrassing is that a
lead story on President Kuffor of Ghana and other West African leaders were
covered on major newspapers, here in the United States, one of which is an
African owned Newspaper called Africa -Abroad USA bi weekly. Jammeh's name
was not seen or heard anywhere".

Jammeh and his delegation were reported to have been hosted at a dinner
organised by a would be future investor in The Gambia. The said investor had
a close door meeting with Jammeh. Sources close to his delegation promised
to provide us with more detailed information about the said meeting between
Jammeh and the investor.
