According to highly placed sources at the state house, the Senegalese President Abdoulie Wade has called for the immediate release of the detained National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD) Executive members. The source said the Senegalese Government has totally condemned the arrestof NADD officials and had called for their immediate release. State house Sources intimated the Senegalese President had also rebuffed claims made by The Gambian leader that he Wade told him that Gambia's opposition fed him with false information about the border impasse.
'In view of the current state of affairs, President Wade, yesterday sent a special envoy to president Jammeh to ask for the release of the detained NADD officials" the source said.
The special envoy of President Wada, who is in the person of Mr. Mbaye Jack Jobe, is also the President of the Senegalese Cultural, Economic and Social Service of Senegal. Mr Jobe met President Jammeh at state house yesterday to deliver the message from president Wada, who is now using diplomatic steps to secure the immediate release of the NADD officials.
Mr Jobe, after meeting the President told reporters that he delivered a message from president Wada and the entire message was about peace and the promotion of bilateral relationship between the two countries and their people. Since the detention of NADD officials President Jammeh and his government had came under pressure both locally and internationally. Repeated calls for the release of these leading politicians had been ignored by The Gambian leader.
It would be recalled that the NADD Executive members were arrested on the 15Th November , on the grounds that they were a threat to national security. The government accuses them of passing what they called false information to the Senegalese government, about The Gambia/Senegal border impasse." Meanwhile, two of the accused persons Halifa Sallah and Omar Amadou Jallow (OJ) are facing sedition charges, while Hamat Bah, is accused of possessing unauthorised government documents.
Observers applauded President Wade's timely intervention. They said Wade's move will no doubt confirm to all and sundry that President Jammeh was bent on misrepresenting him. The said observers say the visit of the Senegalese envoy , goes to show that President Wade was concerned about Jammeh's misinformation campaign and he Wade thought it crucially imperative to clear his name by sending an envoy to Banjul to trash out Jammeh claims that the opposition gave false information to Wade. Observers say such a move might clear President Wade's name, even though he did not publicly disassociate himself from President Jammeh's allegations. "That he Wade chose to take the normal diplomatic channel to address this serious state of affairs."said the observer.
