News media shaken by Harry Yansaneh's death

An autopsy was carried out on 29 July on the body of Harry Yansaneh, the
acting editor of the independent daily For Di People, who died the previous
day after more than two months in hospital. He was hospitalised following an
assault on 10 May by thugs allegedly acting on the orders of ruling party
parliamentarian Fatmata Hassan Komeh.

The forensic specialist who performed the autopsy, Dr. Orwizz Koroma, was
reported by local sources as attributing his death to a dysfunction of both
kidneys.

Reporters Without Borders wrote yesterday to the inspector general of
police, Brima Acha Kamara, requesting that there should at last be a "rapid
and thorough" investigation into the events leading to Yansaneh's
hospitalisation. The organisation also asked for a copy of the autopsy
report. Yansaneh was buried on 31 July in the presence of many of his
colleagues.

Komeh has meanwhile reportedly been questioned by the Criminal Investigation
Department although the date of her interrogation is not known. The Attorney
general was given prior notification in accordance with the law. Komeh was
allowed to go free after giving a statement.


Yesterday also saw the suspension of superintendent Kalia Sesay of
Freetown's central police station, where the police failed to take any
action in response to the complaint Yansaneh filed about the attack.
Nonetheless, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists announced at the
police's weekly news conference that the independent press will boycott the
activities of the president, parliament and police until the Yansaneh case
goes before a court.

La mort d'Harry Yansaneh bouleverse le monde de la presse

Une autopsie a été pratiquée, le 29 juillet 2005, sur le corps du rédacteur
en chef en exercice du quotidien indépendant For Di People, Harry Yansaneh,
décédé la veille, à l'âge de 32 ans, après plus de deux mois
d'hospitalisation.

Selon des sources locales, le médecin légiste, le docteur Orwizz Koroma,
aurait confirmé que la mort du journaliste, très sévèrement battu le 10 mai
par des hommes de main de la députée du parti au pouvoir, Fatmata Hassan
Komeh, est due à un dysfonctionnement de ses deux reins.

Le 2 août, Reporters sans frontières a écrit à l'inspecteur général de la
police, Brima Acha Kamara, pour lui demander qu'une enquête « sérieuse et
rapide » soit enfin menée sur les événements ayant conduit à
l'hospitalisation d'Harry Yansaneh. L'organisation a également souhaité
obtenir une copie du rapport d'autopsie. Le journaliste a été enterré le 31
juillet, en présence de très nombreux confrères.

Parallèlement, Fatmata Hassan Komeh, accusée d'avoir ordonné le tabassage du
journaliste, a été entendue par la Criminal Investigation Department (CID) à
une date indéterminée. Le ministre de la Justice en avait été préalablement
informé, conformément à la loi. Elle a été laissée en liberté après avoir
fait une déposition.

Le 2 août, le superintendant du commissariat central de Freetown, Kalia
Sesay, où Harry Yansaneh avait déposé la plainte qui n'avait connu aucune
suite, a été suspendu de ses fonctions. Malgré tout, l'Association des
journalistes de Sierra Leone (SLAJ) a annoncé, lors du point de presse
hebdomadaire de la police, que la presse indépendante avait décidé de
boycotter les activités de la présidence, du Parlement et de la police
jusqu'à ce que l'affaire Yansaneh soit portée devant un tribunal.
