The situation is very sad indeed...New Orleans was once a beautiful city. I visited Tulane once and I had a great time. Some of my friends are setting up efforts to help students from their alma mater transfer to universities in the DC area. Perhaps it may be good suggestion to post on your blog in order to sensitize the alumni.

I was born in New Orleans, but my family stayed approximately 30 miles from Grand Isle, this was the first place where Katrina hit the shores of the U.S. from the Gulf of Mexico. On Sunday, all of my family evacuated some to Port Arthur, TX, others to Baton Rouge, LA. Fortunate from them, although I heard the road leading to Grand Isle was under 20 feet of water, which is the same road that passes by their house, they were all spared. When they got back home, they didn’t have power, but they did have a home to come back to. Unfortunately, I do have a friend that can't find some of his relatives who lived in New Orleans. In addition, I just read an email saying that the military said they can’t account for approximately 45,000 people. I don't know how true this is, but we do know that because of the inaction by the U.S. government many people have died and are continuing to die because they didn't release funds quickly enough to have these people evacuated in a timely fashion.
Since I'm from New Orleans, I'm heart broken 1) because many people mostly black were left to die and 2) when someone ask me where I was born I can only say, the City that is submerged under water.
I've been tracking things as they unfold in New Orleans. If you are interested in knowing more about the politics of Katrina as it relates to New Orleans and black people, looks at my blog. You will find that lines of American politics are drawn based on black and white issues.
