UDP, APRC militants clash in Brikama
Daily Observer

July 20, 2000
by Sheriff Bojang Jnr

Banjul - Two UDP supporters, Karamo Minteh and Basiru Manka, sustained injuries
after clashes with APRC militants, Tuesday evening in Brikama.
Eye-witnesses said Karamo and Basiru were at the Brikama car park when six
members of the defunct July 22 Movement, led by one Buba Jammeh, went with a
vehicle, registration number BJL 0594 A, to "arrest" Basiru.
Basiru was said to have demanded why he would be arrested and Buba reportedly
told him he (Basiru) was heard making "bitter remarks" against President Jammeh.

Basiru was said to have resisted arrest on the grounds that the six men were not
security agents.
Eye-witnesses said Buba and his men forcibly grabbed Basiru, and that apparently
irked his friend, Karamo Minteh, who intervened on Basiru's behalf.
Eye-witnesses reported that during the fight, the two UDP men were stabbed.
Other supporters of the UDP reported the matter to the police.
When these reporters visited the police station, hundreds of UDP militants were
standing by the station compound.
Fatou Fadera, one of the UDP militants, told Daily Observer, "How can the police
detain a complainant and leave the accused to go scot free?"
However, Basiru was admitted at the Brikama health centre and later released
while Karamo was taken to Royal Victoria Hospital.
At press time, Karamo was said to be in a coma.
Meanwhile, the Brikama police confirmed the story but declined to comment.
