According to the Senegalese daily, Wal Fadjri, Senegalese drivers do not want to transverse The Gambia anymore. In a report published in the online version of the paper on Friday, October 21, the drivers said that regardless of the outcome of the ongoing talks between Jammeh and Wade on the trans-Gambia issue, they will continue bypassing The Gambia. This statement, the paper says, was made to Walf FM radio yesterday by El Hadj Ndiaye, a driver's union representative in Kaolack.
The paper also stated that Wade had agreed to meet Jammeh only after the intervention of certain of his friends, such as President Obasanjo of Nigeria and Prof. Iba Der Thiam. Wade is claimed to have refused to meet Jammeh while the Gambian delegation was transiting in Dakar on their way back from Taiwan.
The Senegalese government, according to Mr. Ndiaye, should assume it's responsibilities and make the Gambians understand that they can do without their ferry services, which by the way is not a safe means of transportation.
In a statement made to Wal Fadjr, Mr. Ndiaye said that the reduction of tariffs is not the major problem, but rather the constant bullying of The Gambian police and custom officials. He said, "the Gambians always make us believe that the ferry is out of order, while it is not; it is just a ploy to oblige passengers to buy goods from the stalls located around the pier."
