  SEDAT JOBE RESIGNS

  by Ebrima Colley Mercy Eze

Momodou Lamin Sedat Jobe, Gambia's secretary of state for foreign affairs
for the last three and a half years has resigned from his post effective
Monday, August 27, 2001. A government press release stated that Mr Jobe
tendered his resignation yesterday and it was accepted by President Jammeh
in accordance with section 71(4) of the constitution of The Gambia.

Sources also disclosed that the former secretary of state for foreign
affairs, Mr Baboucarr Blaise Jagne, who is currently serving as Gambia's
Ambassador to the United Nations is being widely tipped as a replacement. No
official reason was forward by Mr Jobe for resigning. When contacted by the
Daily Observer over the phone, Dr Jobe remarked: "I have nothing to confirm
about, you can contact the secretary general, Office of the President."

A cultural adviser at Unesco's regional office, Dakar, for many years, Jobe
was appointed Gambia's Foreign Secretary on January 19, 1998. He had also
served as chairman of the commission set up by President Jammeh to look into
the establishment of the University of The Gambia.
