EDITORIALEDWARD SINGHATEH, B. JATTA, AND LANG TOMBONG ARRESTED? THE COUP TALK CONTINUES
November 9, 2005
Today, we reported the alleged arrest of Edward Singhateh, Baboucarr Jatta and Lang Tombong Tamba. We have no malicious intentions for publishing such a story. Jammeh and his government are free to come out with their own side of the story. This paper received series of emails and phone calls from concerned Gambians regarding the alleged arrest of Singhateh, Jatta and Tamba. One thing is evident however, the alleged coup story had been going on for the past couple of weeks. It started with the arrest of Samba Bah, who is now linked to espionage, terrorism and economic crime activities.

>From 1994 to date Jammeh, had claimed to have foiled over dozens of bogus coup plots. Interestingly, most of those accused were not convicted by the courts. The government resorted to taking the law into their own hands by summarily executing these alleged coupists in "grand style." Some were held for months, years and later released. We do know that Yahya had long been finding ways and means to discard Edu, Jatta and Tamba. These people are considered as security threat by Yahya. The three had suffered Jammeh's hiring, firing and redeployments. This government lived and survived on lies. They will frame up people in name of "National Security. As the situation appears, we do not want to further comment on the said story, which is yet to be officially confirmed or denied by the government. This government is not to be trusted as it had lied against peaceful loving Gambians time and time.

It is time for Yahya and his government to tell us where the ship of state is heading. The reports we are hearing these days about Yahya and his regime are not promising at all. This coup story had been lingering on the air for the past weeks, but the regime never volunteered to clear the air. Lack of transparency often leads to rumour mongering. Journalists will dig into some of these stories, which are in the public interest. Yahya can continue to call us illegitimate sons and daughters of Africa, but nothing will stop us from reporting the truth.

This is not the time to frame Gambians, Yahya. This is not the time to deny Gambians the right to live. Your Koriteh "Salibo" or surprising gift, if you like will have an adverse effects on our country's fragile democracy. Jammeh you have declared once again that some of your critics will not be living witnesses of the much talked about 2006 elections. You said you had a list of individuals targeted for routine killings. Jammeh were you drunk when talking to the Muslim elders? You shamelessly confessed before the Nation that you are a "real killer" who is ready to take more lives. Jammeh, your statement that you had a list of Gambians to be killed is very scary and worrying. You seem to have forgotten about the murder of Deyda. You mean you are ready to strike again?

Sometimes, it beats once imagination if this government turn around and peddled bogus terrorism charges against Gambians. Yahya Jammeh is nothing but a terrorist. This is a President who will openly said he will continue to kill his country men with impunity. He jailed, tortured and persecuted citizens with impunity. He is practicing domestic terrorism. Countries actively engaged in combating terrorism should focus on Jammeh. He is a threat to humanity. This is the reality. Terrorism took different forms and the approach taken by Jammeh to fire bomb media houses and kill opponents is a glaring example of domestic terrorism.

The anti terrorism law passed by his government is not geared towards the global campaign to fight terror. It is designed to target perceived critics and opponents. He will no doubt test such laws in the looming 2006 polls. We are privy of a classified information, which reveals that Jammeh is planning to frame some opposition leaders in the country. His recent threat to kill was the the tip of the ice berg, as people close to him told us that Jammeh enacted such laws with the sole aim of targeting the opposition and the media.

Yahya Jammeh can be best compared to Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, who is also engaged in domestic terrorism. The two had not only oppressed their people, they have also offended freedom by passing draconian media laws to curtail free speech and expression. The good thing about Zimbabwe is that, Britain and the United States had taken the right steeps by sanctioning Mugabe's government. They were tough on Mugabe's repressive policies by imposing sanctions. We expect the two countries to look into Gambia's case, as President Jammeh is causing mayhem in The Gambia. Late interventions might allow the dictator to further misrule our country. The world should tell Yahya the truth. He should stop propagating terrorism for heaven sake. The crimes he perpetrated against Gambians tantamount to terrorism.

The measures taken by the United States to impose sanctions against Taylor's administration was a right steep in the right direction. This had paved the way for peace for Liberians. Repressive regimes have no place in the civilised world and Yahy's government is not an exception. Yahya will miserably fail the test of time. The killings, bogus coup stories, arrest and the torture of citizens will come to an end soon. We know what we are talking about. Saddam case should serve as an example for Yahya. Sadam was operating torture chambers just like the case of Yahya. Where is Saddam today? Is he not caged? Yahya you can run, but you cannot hide.

There are courts outside The Gambian jurisdiction, were aggrieved parties can go and seek redress on the crimes you committed against Gambians. There is no way that you will escape the International Court of Justice. We will start registering cases now prior to your down fall. This is no joke. It is time for Gambians to set lessons to avoid future Presidents from misruling our dear mother land. Let us nurture the democratic process.

All what Yahya is interested is to plunge our country into chaos to postpone the 2006 polls. Come rain, come shine, Yahya you will go back to Casamance come October 2006. It is time, you consult with your relatives living there, as there is no way you can survive the wind of change. However, let me point out that settling in Casamance, or Morocco cannot save you from facing justice. Justice will indeed be meted out to you. You will dance to the draconian laws you enacted soon. We rest our case.
