The Current situation in the Gambia is a reminder of nomination time for the
office of head chief following its vacancy because the office holder had died
or had been fired by Fafa. From the same Kaabila a son, an uncle, a father and
grand father would all be aspirants to this one vacant position.
Then in a rival Kaabila, perhaps a cousin kaabila, would emerge the
same block of candidates aiming at this single position. Some would claim it
as a birthright whiles for others they just have to be rulers in their life
time or else they would never die happy.
The marabouts would have a field day too. They would predict to every one
who consulted them as the next MANSA and they will be rewarded with
lifestock, percels of land and huge sums of money. Some of the candidates
would tell you that they have been told by their marabouts that they were
born rulers or they had a head of a ruler etc.
There was this story about this gentleman who by his lineage could claim a
certain chieftaincy but because he was was cursed while he was still in his
mother's womb he would ever remain a laughing stock despite his intelligence
and good education.
It seems that this same situation is about to haunt the current political
situation in the Gambia: the desire to be president especially if your
marabout said that you a potential one, no matter what!
