NEWS
HALIFA'S DAMNING LETTER AGAINST JAMMEH NEARLY COST OBSERVER EDITOR HIS JOB
Akaleke, Our Banjul Correspondent

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

November 16, 2005
An insider at the daily Observer has told the ALLGAMBIAN that one of the
paper's sub editors was about to be fired, following the way and manner he
handled the NADD reaction letter on Jammeh's threaths and allegations
against the opposition.

This followed a reaction letter issued by the detained NADD Coordinator
Halifa Sallah, which was copied to the President and all media houses in
the country.

The said sub editor was said to have angered those in corridors of powers
by failing to edit the said opposition condemnation piece against Jammeh.
An emergency board meeting was said to have been summoned, which was
attended by Yankuba Touray and the said sub editor. "The meeting was
centred on the nature of the letter and why was it not properly edited
before publication."said our sources.

Observer insiders said the unnamed sub editor was threatened with sack if
if he fails to edit future letters from Halifa Sallah and the opposition
in general.. The source added that after the said meeting, the sub editor
was heard saying "I will never compromise with my editing policy, as I
want to be a good editor and would stick on to it even if 'm going to get
my marching orders"

It would be recalled that after the firing of Lamin Cham, the former
Editor-in-Chief and MD Momodou Sanyang, some observer reporters were said
to have been lined up for sacking by the new MD Dr.Saja Taal. Shortly
after Taal's appointment reporter Pa Malick Fye was fired, but later
reinstated following the intervention agriculture Minister Yankuba Touray.
Fye was fired for merly asking Jammeh which country was faulty in the just
settled Gambia/Senegal border impasse. Unhappy, with the reporter's
probing question, Fye was fired the next day. He is now back at the
observer, thanks to Yankuba Touray.
