This educated and wise Bishop happens to be one of my stars in this world.I like his eloquence, love of humanity, faithfulness towards God and his tract record of speaking the truth where lies are over whelming tangible reasons. The same Bishop spoke in 1993/4 when Andrew Winter(the then US Ambassador) was bashing the former regime for their failure.Infact those archives are there in the daily observer's 'search and copy rooms'. It is at this very Kungkujang that I saw pilgrims rushing to listen to the wise Bishop 13 years ago! Luckily my compoung was close by.Although a muslim,I can never miss listening to wise sermons coming from wise Bishops and Pastors particularly from Bishop Cleary.
A second pastor I respect is one preaching for a Baptist Church some where in the south here in USA.Him and Cleary share the same zeal and charm.TRUTH HAS NO BOUNDARIES! In the Bishop's message he touched everyone, politicians,Journalists, parents and children.
  Listen to wisdom!
                      Bishop Cleary Calls for Peace
Monday 12th December 2005

By Theresa Johnson & Malafie Badjie

Bishop Michael Cleary (CSSP) has called on people in The Gambia to be peaceful and united.

The Bishop made this call at an annual pilgrimage held by Catholics in The Gambia at Kungkujang Mariama to celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception. “ I appeal to all individuals to live in peace,” he said, urging parents to teach their children the tenets of peace and unity.

He said parents are children’s first teachers, who should inculcate in their children the virtues of faith, love and peace. He added that the role or calling of teachers in society is to instruct young people on the values of life, and if parents are considered as first teachers, they should therefore endeavour to carry out that role.

The Bishop also urged those who are in the profession of teaching to also teach peace and reconciliation so that those they teach would grow up to be peaceful and law abiding citizens. He added that teaching the young peace, love and oneness, teachers would be greatly contributing in curbing violence in the society.

Bishop Cleary also called on politicians and public officers to foster peace and to promote unity among the people. He admonished the media to work against disseminating messages of hatred and to carry out their noble work professionally to promote peace and development in the country.

Bishop Cleary reminded the congregation about the role and importance of Mary or Mariama in the Christian and Muslim doctrines. “She represents the Immaculate Conception we are celebrating,” he said, adding “Let us turn to her in confidence to pray for our country, ourselves and our friends.”

Quoting Pope Benedict XIV, Bishop Cleary said: “You lose nothing when you give yourself to Him [God]. When we give ourselves we gain.”

He added that young people are called upon by the Word of God to guide their lives. “Prepare yourselves and take up seriousness. Above all become zealous listeners of the Word of God. We are called through the grace of our baptism to live a full life, “ he added. He further said reconciliation and Eucharist are major aspects of Christianity, and the latter is the centre of Christian life.

Over 20 priests and other religious denominations, as well as some Muslims attended the feast.
